While the California State Water Project’s main purpose is to store and transport water, many of its facilities were designed with recreation in mind. Tent and RV camping, boating, fishing, swimming, waterskiing, horseback riding, picnicking, hiking, photography, and many other activities are available at DWR facilities.

Visitor Centers

In addition to our lakes and reservoirs, DWR has three visitors centers located at Lake Oroville (Butte County), San Luis Reservoir (Merced County), and Pyramid Lake (Los Angeles County). Each center's friendly staff will guide you through your FREE water journey of discovery via exhibits, films, and publications describing the State Water Project, the importance of water in our state and how water is transported and used. California state-wide issues such as water conservation, floods, droughts, and environmental uses are also the subject of DWR visitor center exhibits. You’ll also get a glimpse of the historic events that motivate the State's planning and development of our water resources.
